What are Facial Peels?

The use of Chemical Peels was first discovered by the ancient Egyptians. The ancient Egyptians (including Cleopatra herself!) bathed in sour milk to soothe and exfoliate their skin. Lactic acid, one of our most loved and safest AHA, is derived from milk! Lactic acid is a gentle and effective exfoliant that leaves your skin feeling soft and refreshed. You can find this amazing AHA in our most popular chemical peels- the AHA Renewal and the Alumier Glow Peel.

Since the ancient Egyptians, scientists and chemists have used the knowledge gathered over the last 100 years to create the revolutionary Chemical Peel formulas that we are able to administer safely and effectively to rejuvenate the skin today.

How do Chemical Peels work?

When the Chemical Peel is applied to the skin the solution penetrates the targeted layer of skin. Once the active ingredients have penetrated the targeted layer of skin, we use Alumier’s aftercare products to soothe and hydrate the skin. The result of having the Chemical Peel is the exfoliation of dead skin cells. The skin may peel for 3-5 days. If the skin peels, picking or pulling at flaking skin is not recommended. The process of this exfoliation reveals a brighter complexion and a radiant glow. The skin can be sensitive after this treatment and it is recommended to follow any post-care instructions provided you. The Chemical Peels we use at Jeunesse are chosen based on your concerns and your skin’s needs. We ensure that we use quality formulations to provide optimal results.

What ingredients are in the Facial peels or Chemical peels you use?

Lactic Acid - This gentle and versatile alpha hydroxy acid (aha) is derived from milk. The use of this ingredient on the skin has been dated all the way back to the Ancient Egyptians. You can find this ingredient at low concentrations in many of the everyday skincare items you have at home and use daily. Lactic acid at higher concentrations is an industry staple in professional treatments to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, cell turnover, and the skin’s complexion while keeping the integrity of the skin in mind.

Glycolic Acid - This alpha hydroxy acid (aha) is derived from sugarcane and is used to slough off dead skin cells to reveal your new and healthy skin cells underneath. This process also stimulates the process of creating collagen and elastin within the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and textured skin.

Salicylic Acid - The spicy salicylic acid or beta hydroxy acid (bha) is derived from the bark of white willow or it can be synthetically made in a lab. Unlike any other acid, salicylic acid is oil soluble, making it the best acid for treating acne and congestion. The use of salicylic acid is often formulated with other chemical exfoliants or used with retinol products to increase the efficacy of this ingredient and deliver better results.

Resorcinol - This skin-brightening antioxidant is often used in formulations to help increase cell turnover to improve the appearance of sun damage, dark spots, pigmentation, and uneven skin tone. This ingredient is also found in everyday skincare at low concentrations because it neutralizes free radicals and sun damage to help protect our skin from extrinsic aging. This is a powerhouse ingredient that can be used all year round when treating melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and dark spots.

Kojic Acid - This sun damage fighting acid is commonly known as ‘Koji’, it is derived from rice. It is a popular ingredient in Japanese skincare for treating melasma, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and improving acne. Kojic acid is best known for its skin brightening and antimicrobial properties.

  • During the treatment a Chemical peel creates a warming sensation that is often accompanied by a tingling, active or itchy sensation. The skin may flush and become pink during the treatment, this can last for several hours post treatment.

Peeling can occur and the degree of peeling depends on the treatment and the condition of the skin. Some may peel for five to several day and some may only flake. For most people, deeper Chemical peels cause more peeling.

All chemical peel treatments are tailored to the individual and are controlled using an escalating strategy that starts with a superficial chemical peel and gradually builds to a deeper peel safely. For best results, 6 to 9 peels, spaced out over 14 to 28 days, are typically needed. Please note that Chemical peels are not a permanent solution for deep acne scars and moderate to severe acne.
